Introduction:

Today, we received an inquiry about motor shafts from a customer, which prompted me to create this blog post to compare two distinct materials – Q235 steel and SUS420J2 martensitic stainless steel. These materials differ significantly in terms of composition, properties, and applications.

Material Composition:

Q235 Steel:

Q235 steel is a carbon structural steel primarily composed of carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. It is a versatile structural steel commonly used in the construction of buildings, bridges, ships, vehicles, and mechanical components. In the context of magnetic components, it finds application in items such as pot magnet casings.

SUS420J2 Martensitic Stainless Steel:

SUS420J2 is a martensitic stainless steel primarily composed of chromium, carbon, manganese, and trace amounts of other alloying elements. It is used in the manufacturing of cutting tools, surgical instruments, mechanical parts, and other applications requiring high hardness and cutting performance.

Corrosion Resistance:

Q235 Steel:

Q235 steel is not considered stainless steel and lacks good corrosion resistance. It is susceptible to oxidation and rust, often requiring anti-corrosion treatment or coatings to enhance its resistance to corrosion.
